UK construction firm with huge £58m turnover collapses into administration

A UK construction firm with a turnover of nearly £60million is understood to be looking to appoint administrators. Caldwell Construction has reportedly filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators after reports surfaced that staff were going unpaid, as tensions ran high near Liverpool.

The Stoke-on-Trent groundworks contractor reportedly instructed to have hundreds of subcontractors stay home this week, following concerns that many had gone unpaid last Friday, reports the Construction Enquirer. According to the accounts for the last financial year, published on the Government website, its turnover was £58.4million to March 2025, but it reported an operating profit of less than £1million, at £936,437.

Caldwell delivers groundworks for domestic and commercial properties primarily across the Midlands and the North West, including foundations and masonry work.

It has been working on sites for housing developers, the Vistry Group, which confirmed that Caldwell contractors have been pulled off its sites.

A Vistry spokesperson said: "We have been in consultation with Caldwell Construction and it is unfortunate that this action has been taken.

"To ensure there are no delays to construction programmes, we are in discussion with alternative subcontractors from our preferred supplier listings to continue the works."

Caldwell was incorporated in 2007 and it employs around 50 staff from its Stoke head office and a North West base in Warrington.

The Express has contacted Caldwell Construction Ltd for comment.

One way of reducing the cost of houses, is for a subcontractor to carry out the groundwork, and then declare bankruptcy. That leaves the developer a way to reduce their costs. And, worryingly, there is nobody to sue if the foul drainage, water, power, or other SuDs installation is below standard.
